Ingredients for
the Bioeconomy

The partnership powering circular bio-based ingredients for sustainable food systems

Shaping the future of bio-based ingredients in Europe

Ingredients for the Bioeconomy (I4BE) is a European partnership connecting clusters, innovation organisations, research centres and regional authorities to accelerate the transition towards a circular and competitive bioeconomy.

Our mission is simple: transform biomass, agri-food side streams and emerging biological resources into innovative ingredients, sustainable products and new business opportunities.

Together, we work on six strategic innovation areas:

  • New sources of food ingredients
  • Alternative and sustainable proteins for food and feed
  • Circular economy and resource revalorisation
  • Upcycling of food by-products and side streams
  • Innovative processing technologies
  • Consumer acceptance of upcycled products

But I4BE is more than a network. We turn collaboration into action. Across Europe, we help companies, researchers and regions:

  • Connect with the right innovation partners
  • Access European funding opportunities
  • Launch collaborative innovation projects
  • Exchange knowledge and best practices
  • Explore market trends and future value chains
  • Identify industrial challenges and develop concrete solutions

By bringing together innovation leaders from across regions, I4BE creates the conditions for new projects, faster market uptake and stronger bioeconomy ecosystems.

Connecting ecosystems. Accelerating innovation. Unlocking the bioeconomy.

I4BE at a glance :

    • 9 countries
    • 17 regions
    • 28 NUTS2 regions
    • 17 partners : 13 clusters, 2 RTOs and 2 regional authorities

I4BE, who and where are the partners behind this network ?

Biomass, side-streams, ingredients, an emerging universe with an amazing innovation & sustainability potential !

I4BE is about circular food ingredients, but tell me more about the what, the why and the for whom ?

I4BE is an engine to initiate, co-create & implement European-funded innovation projects. Join this movement!

Through the I4BE Matchmaking Platform powered by B2Match, members can connect with organisations across Europe, discover collaboration opportunities and build partnerships for innovation and European projects.

Value chains

From biomass to high-value nutritional & functional bio-compounds & ingredients: valorising side-streams is a sustainable and tech-based challenge, generatic economic values

I4BE focused on the generation of nutritional and functional ingredients, sourced from bio-based products & crops produced out of agriculture, livestock, forestry, weeds & herbs, fruits & legumes, aquatic biotopes, and microbiological ecosystems.

Agricultural & food organic waste constitutes another significant portion of biodegradable material for transformation into bio-based products.

New innovative & circular value-chains emerge from the transformation of bio-based products & crops, side-streams, aquatic biomass and microbial strains into bio-active-compounds & ingredients (nutritional & functional), and finally finished b2c and b2b food & non-food products.

Projects

The I4BE Partnership is active on the EU scene with flagship EU-funded projects dedicated to promising approach to circular ingredients

B-Resilient
Project set an ambitious package of support actions to empower food processing SMEs to become more resilient by means of an optimum use of biomass, and with appropriate digital solutions.

Biotech4Food
How biotechnology can improve the agri-food systems as it powered life sciences & health sectors! This is the bet of this EU-funded project, coordinated by Wagralim, together with the I4BE community and other relevant stakeholders, including a cohort of 15 SMEs.

GRAPPA

Green Resilient Approaches to anchor European food-producing and processing SMEs into global value chains through connecting place-based biomass system innovation actors. Funding, training, networking, and market access — designed to help you develop upcycled products from your side-streams
